Throughout 3,000 years of history, Jerusalem served as a source of inspiration to poets, musicians and other creative spirits.
Now, the Jerusalem Season of Culture summons the ancient muse for an annual summer showcase of the city's contemporary cultural treasures. From mid-May through the end of July, the city will host a series of riveting artistic experiences spanning the worlds of dance, music, poetry, philosophy, visual art, new media, and more.
Brace yourself for a summer of breathtaking locations, dazzling creativity, and unforgettable moments that could happen only in Jerusalem.
On offer this coming weekend is a packed evening and one central dilemma. Believe us, you will defiantly be spoiled for choice. In the right corner, Uzi Navon and friends at Beit Avichai; a lineup of twelve people with a very special retro groove, will set out on a full five-day, countrywide performance-tour. On Saturday night, they will be serving a soulful playlist at 22:00. In the left corner, Ohad Pishop and Yishai Adar, better known as Bnei Hama, will be performing materials from their newly released album in the Yellow Submarine. This will be prefaced by an opening concert, which, by the way, is no less promising: Ryskinder and the wonders of synthpop. You can get a little taste of the album here. If you haven't got around to it yet, we highly recommend you do.
A Jerusalem "awakening" care of the city's Hitorarut (awakening) organization: Hadas Lazar and photographer, Daniel Ulster, invite you on an entirely new kind of tour—through the lens of a camera—of the city's Nahlaot neighborhood. The tour will set off on Friday, January 20, from the bridge leading to the Supreme Court and will take you on an architectural journey that that will not only re-introduce you to a beautiful part of the city, but will also provide you with a rare opportunity to learn how to use equipment that is about to be reduced to an application on your smartphone. The tour is free, but must be booked in advance. However, if the weather is uncooperative, a new date will be set.
The Art Cube have just sent out a general invitation for artists interested in exhibiting their work in its exhibition space that will be opened to the public on March 31. But meanwhile it is open for visits during the designated opening hours. For visiting times and details of the submission process you can click right here.
A new site was launched this week which lists events, venues and a whole host of information relating to Jerusalem. The guide, "Only Jerusalem", provides statistical information on the number of tourists who visited the city last year (419,787, in case you were wondering) and provides up-to-date information on what is happening in the city. But, if you insist, the site's founders Ron Peled and Shahar Shilo, also provide personal tours of Jerusalem which must be coordinated in advance.
Did you know that research carried out by the Hebrew University has found its way to Chinese television? The researchers, genetically engineered tobacco to produce an anti-malaria drug and provided us with a fascinating insight into a scientific world that is constantly re-inventing the familiar. You can see more on this source of local pride by clicking right here.
And finally, a little cultural dessert: The "Af" magazine is celebrating its second anniversary with a special edition that is digitally amazing and currently being distributed all over the city. You might also want to check out their site, which is taking a nostalgic at past projects from previous editions. Congrats!
